The City of Green Buildings Academy 2015 - To Build or To Transform

Educational Program for Students and Young Professionals
TimelineLecturers

About

The City of Green Buildings Academy is specially designed for students and young professionals from a multitude of specialties who are or will eventually be the stakeholders of the construction industry. Because it is part of our mission, the main purpose is to contribute to a deeper understanding of the concept of green and sustainable buildings, constituting a valuable experience for the students and the young professionals involved.

The continuous education in the field of innovative and sustainable buildings of professionals, decision makers and consumers in parallel with the training and guiding of the future generations is critical for the future of our society. Sustainable, or “green buildings”, design and construction provide an opportunity to use resources more efficiently, while creating healthier and more energy-efficient buildings. Successful green buildings leave a lighter footprint on the environment through conservation of resources, while at the same time balancing energy-efficient, cost-effective and low-maintenance products for construction needs.

We consider that green buildings will create a built environment where people will live, work, relax and play in better, healthier and more cost effective spaces.

t

To build or To Transform?

This year The City of Green Buildings Academy will focus on a complex analysis based on the following question: “to build a green building or to transform an existing building in a green one?”.

Why to take into account the transformation of an existing building? Well, for example: real estate industry is dynamic and many buildings with strategic positions are not yet finished or the spaces aren`t rented. Therefore, the retrofit into a green building could increase its attractiveness. Another example is related to energy efficiency. The target audiences of Energy Efficiency Directive (2012/27/UE), also known as 20-20-20 program, are public administration bodies, but unfortunately they don`t have the financial potential to build green and sustainable buildings, due to different budget limitations. On the other hand, retrofitting existing buildings that public administrations own should be considered.

Did you know that LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) or BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology) have a certification program for major renovation of existing buildings? In this way the retrofitted buildings can become “green buildings” and obtain a trusted certificate to prove their energy efficiency.

When and where can you find it?

Cluj-Napoca and Sibiu

The City of Green Buildings will take place in Cluj-Napoca and Sibiu between 30th of August and 13th September.

Why also Sibiu?

Because 2015 will be the International Year of Light and in the Heart of Southern Transylvania, Sibiu (also known by its German name Hermannstadt) will take place the ”LVMEN” Past, Present & Future event. This is an event with an international exposure where we will find exhibitions, outdoor performances and the international congress and workshop of CNRI (lighting challenges). Another reason why we will be present at this event is because of you, our participants. You asked us after the last edition to expand our autumn school and we think Sibiu is the best opportunity in order to gain more knowledge about lighting and the impact it has upon buildings. So, here we are! See you this year in Cluj-Napoca and then Sibiu!

Approach

The City of Green Buildings Academy offers a unique approach, being based on case studies and the analysis of practical, non-theoretical, aspects that students and young professionals need to learn in order to become true experts in this field.

Language

The main language used during the lectures and workshops will be English. Before applying make sure your level of English is high enough. On the other hand, this is a great opportunity to exercise and improve your English language skills.

What does it cost?

The participation fee is 39 EUR if you register before 31st of July and 49 EUR if you register from 1st of August onward. You can pay either online by card or by bank transfer after you fill and submit the registration form. We will offer you free accommodation in  Cluj and Sibiu, a lunch meal everyday and free public transport in Cluj. We will not cover any travel related expenses to and back home from Cluj.

Can I come?

Yes, if you are a student (Bachelor, Masters, PhD), recent graduate or young professional in any field related to the sustainable construction industry (engineering, architecture, natural sciences, economics, marketing, medicine, psychology). But hurry up, as the number of places available is limited to 40 and when we reach the limit we will close the registration process.

Courses

A brief description of the courses

Introduction in the green building world

Hygrothermal design of green buildings

TOPICS

The envelope is a separator between the conditioned and unconditioned environment of a building. During this case study session, you’ll learn how to design in a smart way the envelope of a building in order to achieve greater interior comfort and to reduce the energy consumption.

CASE STUDY DETAILS

  • Methods: Lectures
  • Course level: Beginner’s/Intermediate/Advanced
  • Target group: Bachelor’s students of engineering or science
  • Required knowledge: An engineering or science background at Bachelor’s level
  • Trainer : To be determined

Ventilation and climatization of the rooms

TOPICS

Which are the conditions that make people healthy and productive? Do you think that the air quality and temperature contribute to the wellbeing of the occupants? All this subjects will be discussed, but we will focus on the ways in which interior comfort can be obtained in a cost-effective manner.

Lighting systems

TOPICS

Lighting is one of the most critical and most visceral qualities of an indoor space, and the difference between good and bad lighting can make or break comfort, mood and overall happiness in your home. So, you’ll learn how to design a good lighting, how to benefit of daylight and how to control the lighting systems.

Building management systems

TOPICS

In order to optimize the performance and measure the energy consumption of modern building a Building Management System (BMS) is an essential feature to consider. Usually, a 30% reduction of energy consume is obtained after BMS is implemented, but during this session we will analyse different buildings where this system was integrated and we will discuss all the benefits.

Integrated design tools

TOPICS

The design of buildings requires the integration of many kinds of information into a synthetic whole. An integrated process, or “whole building” design process, includes the active and continuing participation of users, code officials, building technologists, cost consultants, civil engineers, mechanical and electrical engineers, structural engineers, specifications specialists, and consultants from many specialized fields. We will discover tools, including software, which supports the integrated design process.
